Strategic Business Modelling
A two-day intervention for the leadership team of a German robotics manufacturer that aligned sales and operations through a principle-driven business modelling framework.
Context
The CEO of a prominent German robotics manufacturer identified a need to realign the Sales and Operations leadership team around three core pillars: authority with accountability, equality with uniformity, and a shared growth mindset. While the team was technically proficient, there was a perceived gap in how leadership principles were being translated into operational strategy. This is a common strategic failure; research from Harvard Business Review suggests that 90% of strategies fail due to poor execution rather than poor planning. The challenge was to move beyond abstract leadership concepts and create a shared, principle-driven roadmap that would guide the team's strategic advances in a competitive market.
Solution
The intervention was designed as a two-day immersion that bridged the gap between behavioral leadership and strategic business modelling, utilizing the Business Model Canvas (BMC) as a primary framework for alignment:
Principle-Led Simulations: The workshop began with experiential activities designed to surface the practical tensions between authority and accountability, allowing leaders to experience the friction of siloed decision-making and the benefits of a unified approach.
Segmented Ideation: Participants were categorized into three distinct roles—Dreamers, Designers, and Developers. This ensured that every stage of the business model was scrutinized from multiple perspectives: high-level strategy, practical implementation, and technical support.
Interactive Kiosks: A kiosk-based approach was used to facilitate deep dives into each component of the Business Model Canvas, ensuring comprehensive coverage and equal participation from all functional heads.
Bespoke Questioning: Specific question banks were developed for each participant group to guide their ideation on how to align their functional area with the organization's core pillars.
Impact
The workshop resulted in a consolidated and actionable roadmap for the leadership team:
Strategic Alignment: The leadership team co-created a portfolio of business-model improvements, with each action explicitly mapped to the core pillars of accountability and growth mindset.
Cross-Functional Synergy: The Dreamer-Designer-Developer framework provided a permanent language for the team to use when evaluating new initiatives, ensuring that strategy and execution remained in sync.
Actionable Roadmap: The output provided the CEO with a clear, principle-driven blueprint for strategic advances, moving the leadership team from functional silos to a collaborative business modelling culture.
